Resumo: | Between 1901 and 1914, after a short period in the State of Sao Paulo, the Italian physician Giovanni Palombini traveled around the countryside of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. During his journey, apart from the itinerant practice of medicine, he constructed a detailed, report of his voyage, in which he described his experience. Among those he included health practices, diseases, health conditions of the population, contacts with different ethnic groups, details about climate, agriculture, food, mores, clothes, urbanism and professions. The main purpose of his narrative was to promote Italian immigration to the State of Rio Grande do Sul. For that purpose, he received official support from the government. Based on the analysis of the contents of his report, it can be noticed that Palombini worked under the influence of the protocols of medical geography, a discipline devoted to the study of the geographic distribution of diseases under the influence of the environment. This research followed the notion of the etiology of disease, as understood in the early XIX century, and its characteristics vocabulary (circunfusa, ingesta, excreta, percepta, applicata e gesta). The methodology of Oral History to obtain data about the life history of Palombini, as well as other Italian physicians, was applied. The medical thinking and the scientific influences that permeated his professional work, such as the discipline of Hygiene and the positivist ideology were analysed; a substantial amount of information about the professional activity of Italians physicians, their contribution to the development of medical knowledge, as well as how they became part of the local community was generated. |
