Resumo: | This research aims at understanding the institutional route of the undergraduate course in Tourism of the Catholic University in Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), along its 38 years (1972-2010), since the embryonic expectations of its founders to the discourses of its present protagonists, bringing subsidies for reflections about the historic-social context and challenges of the course. It presents its historical process, pioneering, insertion and relevance for the State of Rio Grande do Sul, specially for the qualified professionalization of the touristic activity. Besides considering the route of the tourism course – creation context, actuality, extinction, and the creation of a technological course in the area – one writes about the higher Tourism education in Brazil. The research embraces the oral history methodology, by highlighting interviews performed in the period of 2008-2010. Several documents were also collected. Consequently, this is a study about professors’, former professors, alumni and people involved with tourism memories concerning the Higher Course of Tourism at PUCRS. Far beyond the reconstruction of history of this course, the investigation is interested in the senses and meanings attributed by the narrators and their personal experiences within this space, in the ways in which they compose their reminiscences, memories and forgetfulness which they actively built when elicited, provoked, and mobilized by their memories, in order to narrate them in the interviews. So, the tourism course was the motive and the theme for the talks, and these in turn were the threads of the web in the investigation. The study follows and analyses the three stages of the course: beginning with its creation, from 1972 to 1976; secondly, its consolidation from 1976 to the end of the 1990’s; and thirdly, the present day, from the end of the 1990’s to 2010. Though the course has consolidated itself as well as contributed to the advances in the touristic studies in Brazil, it was extinguished and the Higher Course in Tourism Management Technology began. These events did not annihilate it, but they make it intelligible when one realizes the relationships of one course to its time. The analysis of such memories allows us to asses that the course followed a route according to the context conditions in which it developed. The course was created, changed, and became a quality course, undergoing the changes which affected the teaching of Brazilian tourism, and finally lived a History in its full sense, and this allows us to state that the history of the Tourism course at PUCRS represents the history of the higher Tourism education in Brazil. |
