Resumo: In the last years, Education through Sports is being recognized by different types of leadership in society, since it represents a possibility to develop attitudes and values in children and young people. Pierre de Coubertin touched this point and it is part of the Olympic Charter. However, there are indications that suggest some distance between the principles and objectives that rule the organization and operation of the Olympic Movement and the children and young people sports education reality in Brazil. The Brazilian scientific community has been questioning this practice, emphasizing the need to consider some important topics related with pedagogic, physical integrity and psychological aspects of the practitioners. Departing from this context a research was conduct with the follow objectives: a) to investigate players’ and coaches’ discourses and practices on high performance basketball teams, referring to Education through sports in Brazil and specifically basketball; b) to confront practices and discourses with alleged current theoretic; c) to suggest guiding principles for Education through sports to children and youth, directed to basketball. It is a study of qualitative and comprehensive nature, achieved through interviews with coaches and players of high performance basketball teams. Information’s collected were submitted to Discursive Textual Analysis, in an integration of “a priory” and emergent categories. In most cases, regular, as well as guided physical activity for kids and youth were emphasized, however the results showed that actual sports initiation, organized by basketball Federations across the country, claim to overcome the models which suggest precocious specialization and consequent kids and youth growth and development stages disrespect, to reach models in accordance with sport Education theories. Amongst recommended activities in accordance with guiding principles deviated from the study are cooperative games, festivals and jamborees adapted for basketball.
