Resumo: In the 21st century, higher education institutions are expected to develop new ideas that should go beyond current practice and seek future trends. HEIs are responsible for forming students to be agents of change and innovation, as well as for promoting the political, economic, social and cultural development of society. Faced with the challenges and needs for the development of a culture of educational innovation in higher education, this study sought to respond to the trends that shape educational innovation in Brazilian higher education, presenting a conceptual model of trends categorized in dimensions and subdimensions, based on national and international studies of trends for the sector and criteria for successful and innovative practices, INEP's evaluation and supervision instruments for higher education. This is an exploratory study, composed of interviews (76 online and 17 of deepening) with specialists in education and management of higher education, which were analyzed qualitatively. The trend-related model revealed 13 dimensions, 18 sub-dimensions of 1st level, 92 subdimensions of 2nd level and 11 subdimensions of 3rd level. The findings of the study, related to educational innovation in higher education, especially to the dimensions that encompass the trends aligned to the learning innovations, provide a reflection before the studies of organizational innovation and services in higher education. The results showed the alignment of the interviewees' perceptions and trends studies, highlighting the Universal Design dimension of Accessibility and Learning and the subdimensions Governance, Risk Management, Extension Curriculum, Affirmative Policies and Leisure and Living Spaces. This study aims to contribute to the theoretical advances on the topic of educational innovation in higher education and to the strategic planning of HEI, facilitating the identification of opportunities, including the quality assurance and recognition of the regulations that govern Brazilian higher education, as well as the implementation of innovation practices in HEIs. The research results can serve the interests not only of HEIs, but also of all stakeholders in the industry, who care about quality education, which holds the true educational goals, accessible, inclusive and innovative.
