Resumo: Burnout syndrome, predominantly investigated in the work context, has progressively expanded to other social groups: academic burnout (attributed to university students), family, religious and others. This study investigated, in its general objective, the prevalence and associated factors of the syndrome in high school students in the state public network of Mato Grosso and also, the correlations between the variables: years and shifts; gender identity; the employment situation; choosing a future profession; family monitoring and the National High School Examination, as complementary objectives. The term used in this research to endorse the participants was “school burnout”, with the aim of differentiating them from higher education students. The research was conducted using a transversal qualitative-quantitative approach and analyzed data collected by a simple random probabilistic survey, which ensured the representativeness of the students. Three instruments were applied electronically: Socio-school questionnaire; Burnout Syndrome assessment scale in students (adapted); Questionnaire – student stressors, when collecting data. The study collected suggestions regarding coping with the main stressors perceived by students. With a participation of 9,196 participants, the results revealed that 74.79% showed levels of emotional and physical exhaustion, 44.43% indicated a feeling of ineffectiveness in training and 35.52% expressed feelings of detachment. Furthermore, 26.95% of participants were diagnosed at level 1 of burnout, 12.69% at level 2 and 3.89% at level 3. In the quantitative approach, students indicated that: student life, the relationship between studies with a fixed or seasonal working life and ENEM are sources of stress and are in the phase of – almost exhaustion. In the qualitative, the perceived stressors were: the student himself, study, work, school and the classroom, all under the aegis of the teacher. The data highlights the importance of addressing burnout among high school students and the need to implement prevention strategies in the face of stressors and appropriate intervention. This study addressed burnout syndrome among high school students, filling a gap in scientific research, as bibliographical survey, aimed not only to deepen the understanding of burnout in this group, but also to provide subsidies for the development of public policies and effective practices in promoting the mental health and academic success of these young people.
