Resumo: The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by rupture of the endothelium and alveolar injury resulting from an uncontrolled lung inflammatory response causing compromise in gas exchange. The main causes of ARDS, sepsis is highlighted, especially in hospital settings. Treatment of ARDS is still a clinical health problem, so new therapies are needed. Considering that an imbalance of oxidant and antioxidant species in the lung tissue as an important event for the development of ARDS with favoring of the oxidant pathway, thus modulating lung inflammation positively, we investigated in the present study the mechanisms involved in the antioxidant effects of the treatment with photobiomodulation and /or Viamin C. Adult male Balb/c mice were submitted to LPS injection (Salmonella abortus equi, ip) and irradiated or not with LED 2 and 6 h after LPS injection. Vitamin C treatments (150 mg / kg, ip) were performed 2 h after the induction of ARDS with LPS alone or concomitantly with LED treatment. Our preliminary results showed that both, LED or Vit C treatments, were able to attenuate acute lung inflammation induced by sepsis, but by different mechanisms. The LED seems to act by decreasing the release of important inflammatory mediators such as IL-17, while Vit C appears to increase the IL-10 anti- inflammatory mediator. In addition, VitC exerts important modulation in platelets, which in turn modulate the recruitment of neutrophils to the airways. On the other hand, the association of Vit C with LED so far did not seem to be an advantageous association, since in most parameters evaluated the effects of the isolated treatments were better than when associated.
