Resumo: Portfolio management has been an ally in the implementation of the strategy in organizations that use it, as they contribute to the maintenance and creation of new services and products that will guarantee the sustainable competitiveness of organizations. Through project portfolio management, the organization's priorities are identified, decisions on project investments are made, and resources are allocated. Among the main objectives of portfolio management is the strategic alignment of the projects with the organizational strategy, through decision making. From this premise the present dissertation aims to demonstrate how the portfolio management influences the decision making process in the projects of a financial organization. In order to reach this goal, the study began by means of bibliometric research on the subject of portfolio management and subsequent bibliographic research on the theme, decision making. The processes that make up project portfolio management and their relationships with decision making available in the literature were studied in depth, through the rationality of strategic decision making, political behavior and intuition in decision making and decision making effective. To enable the definition of constructs and formulation propositions. The methodological option chosen was a single case study, presented in a qualitative and descriptive way. The research was directed to 12 professionals from a financial organization (director, managers, specialists and senior analysts) that had more than a year contact with portfolio management and decision making. The interviews were semi structured, carried out with the support of an interview protocol and the script of questions previously elaborated based on the propositions. The collected data were treated and analyzed through the use of the qualitative data analysis technique through five phases of analysis and their interpretations. The results confirmed the relationship between "the use of the process of identifying projects in portfolio management to influence decision making", to add value to the business. It is also possible to demonstrate moderately that "the use of criteria for project selection influences the consequences of decision making", to assist in the strategic management of the organization. Emphasizing that the results of this research can`t be treated in a generalized way, due to the methodological procedure adopted, being able to assist other organizations in the analysis of the portfolio during the decision making process. The results obtained can be used in future studies related to portfolio management and decision making. Due to a lack of work in the direct relationship between portfolio management and decision-making literature, this makes the information of this research useful to the academy for future studies.
