Resumo: In the last years, Physical Education has been consolidating itself as a knowledge field for the teacher s and student s efforts to attend an increasing demand of professionals and new knowledges about health life style from the society. However, even with the consolidation, there are still gaps on these professional performances, mainly on the educational foundation and teaching exercise, in schools and universities. Therefore, we think it is basic to the Physical Education knowledge field development to search the origin of the field consolidation. These are the historical, politic, social and economic elements that contributed to the concept and teaching formulation of Physical Education in Brazil. Having the historical and dialectical materialism as basis, we believe that get back to the MEC/USAID agreements debate (Culture and Education Ministry of Brazil and United States Agency for International Development) can be useful to better understand the teaching exercise and the educational praxis in the Brazilian university and also offer a contribution to the academic debate on historical teaching formation.
