Resumo: Oral health may be defined as a standard of health related to the oral cavity that allows the individual to speak and socialize without discomfort or embarrassment due to diseases. Early detection of caries lesions, before there is a need for restorative procedures, is of fundamental importance and contributes to the general welfare of the population. In this project, a novel system for imaging the coherent light scattering pattern (speckle) in dental tissues was developed, aiming to qualify and quantify any damage to the enamel / dentin using the different statistical patterns of the speckle generated by healthy and injured dental tissues, seeking the less invasive approach possible, with low cost, Brazilian technology and overcoming the obstacles encountered by current technology. The results demonstrate that coherent illumination enhance the contrast between the health and decay tissue in the enamel, demonstrating the viability of the technique.
