Resumo: This study is about the implantation and the work education of the North American missionary Matha Hite Watts between the end of the century XIX and the beginning of the century XX, in the city of Piracicaba, located in the state of São Paulo. The analysis to interpret the historical interfaces of the period is based in three points: gender, education and mission. Martha Watts, is considerate the first Methodist educator in Brazil. Her reputation was built in 1881, in the city of Piracicaba, where she founded the Piracicabano School, which still exists. Her educational experience was relevant for the Methodists Schools performance, adopting an innovative ped agogy, having the templates of the European countries and also from her home place. During the final century XIX in Brazil, Martha Watts showed determination in facing the difference of a new culture and environment with habits, gestures and words unknown for her. This study sought from the dialog of the letters left by the missionary, contributing for the research line in Brazilian History Education. The missionary work of Martha Watts is a valuable legacy for the study in History of Education, Women s History and Gender.(AU)
