Resumo: The following work focuses on the parents participation and work in the School Council. This participation was allowed after the 1988 Constitution and with the Law of Guidelines and Bases of the National Education (Law nº 9394/96 LDBEN). The aim of this study is to identify the concept of the participation of parents who are members of the School Council, and map the possible ideological profiles of them in the school management. It is an empirical research, however it was based on ideological profiles, provided by Sociology of Education and Politic Science analyzes. As theoretical reference, we were guided by Luis Pereira, Juan Bordenave, Mauricio Tragtenberg, Edmundo Campos and C. B. Macpherson. The research was made in one of the public schools of São Bernardo do Campo city, in São Paulo. We used field research and bibliographic research methods. Besides the field research, which was based on qualitative and semi-open interviews, we analyzed the Federal and State Laws with the purpose of verifying the existing gaps in the legislation, as well as the limits established by it in the participation of the parents in the school s management.(AU)
