Resumo: Even though there is a general agreement among Early Childhood Education scholars that caring and educating should be inseparable things, the call notices for Public Tenders sometimes presents a dichotomous conception of these axes. The main aim of this research is to get a better understanding about how the class assistant in São Bernardo do Campo's Early Childhood Education has been developing her job. The research aims as well to understand her occupied space at that position mainly concerning to care and education. To support this, we based our research on Azevedo's (2013) studies on the construction of the expression caring- disciplining applied to Early Childhood Education; at the historical survey of policies on Early Childhood Education of Kramer (2011) and Kullmann (2000), and at Oliveira´s (2010) findings regarding the comprehension of national guidelines for Early Childhood education. The methodology used on this research consists of documental analysis (GIL, 2002, 2008) of theoretical contributions and of official documents of the referred city. The main aims of this research are (i) to identify the municipality's conception on the real job function of the Class Education Assistant, from then on the analysis of the Statute and Career Plan for Teaching Professionals and Basic Education Servants of São Bernardo do Campo Municipal Public Education and the Municipality´s Curricular; (ii) to investigate whether the documents make it possible to split education and care activities in the day-to-day of the day-care centers. The results of this research presents inconsistencies between the commitments undertaken in the official documents of the City Hall and the way in which the management of positions is carried out, especially concerning the job position of Class Assistant, revealing vision and welfarism practices in the education in some aspects, especially with regard to education and care in the stage of Early Childhood Education
