Resumo: In the present work we analyze the pontifical documents on women, issued in the pontificate of John Paul II (1978-2005). The first and most important pontifical document is the Apostolic Letter Mulieris Dignitatem, dated 1988, which identifies women with Mary, extolling motherhood, family and the education of sons and daughters as feminine attributes that constitute their vocation and dignity. This model wants to be, in the view of the Catholic Church, the definition of the role of women in society, suggesting that their place is first established in private space. Other documents of John Paul II referring to women were also analyzed, such as his Letter to Women (1995); the Apostolic Letter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis (1994); the Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Collaboration of Man and Woman to the Church and the World (2004). Already in the pontificates of Benedict XVI and Francisco, who did not focus on the production of specific documents on women, we made references to them in generic documents and public pronouncements, aiming to observe the continuities or ruptures with the guidelines of the letters of John Paul II. This initiative presents and analyzes the predominant understanding of Catholic popes about women. The method for this purpose was bibliographic research and documentary research.
