Resumo: Comparative study that analyzes the scientific divulgation practiced by the magazines Ciência Hoje (CH), Scientific American Brasil (SAB) and Superinteressante (SI), pointing out convergences and divergences among the three publications. The objective is to analyze how the forms of text construction and the use of illustration in the cover reports and articles of the magazines CH, SAB and SI can contribute or interfere effectively in the scientific divulgation they practice. In order to do so, five basic presuppositions are outlined: (1) the publications in analysis prioritize on the cover themes belonging to the Basic Sciences over themes belonging to Human and Social Sciences; (2) in the wild field of Basic Sciences there is a preference, on the magazines covers, for themes related to health; (3) the themes approached on the covers of the magazines CH, SAB and SI are not, in general, coincident, since they do not follow the logic of hard news ; (4) the frequent use of explanatory elements, figurative terms, several information sources and direct speech in the text constructions of the cover reports and articles of the publications, as well as the use of properly contextualized illustrations, contribute to make the texts more intelligible; (5) the magazines CH, SAB and SI, although are considered magazines of scientific divulgation, present different levels of divulgation, according to the readers profile. In consonance with those presuppositions, the specific objectives are: a) identify, in two wild categories, the most explored themes, gathering them in subcategories to identify more affinity / proximity among them; b) examine, through the forms of text construction and the use of illustration on the cover reports and articles, the criteria used by the publications to publicize about science and technology. To respond to the parameters established in the objectives presented, the methodology includes questionnaire with the editors of the publications and content analysis of the selected sample which encompasses 19 cover reports / articles of the magazines CH, SAB and SI, chosen between July 2009 and June 2010. The collected data - properly discussed allow confirming the presuppositions, since, generally, it is evident that the scientific divulgation practiced by the three publications present more divergences than convergences. This allows them to establish different levels of divulgation, marked in the way they build their texts and they make use of illustrations, with more difficulty in SAB and CH and with a more simplified content in SI.
