Resumo: This work makes a description of the parameters in the design of high capacity optical systems and help the planning and the implementation of these networks. It shows the factors that limit the system capacity, like attenuation and dispersion. The main focus is the limitation imposed by the Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) for the single mode fiber, with wide application in modern optical networks. Based at the G.652 Recommendation from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), some comparisons of the limits were done with some simulations using a specific software by Virtual Photonics Inc. (VPI). The results, in some cases, have meaningful divergence. Thus, it is proposed a new model to check the theoretical limit imposed by the PMD in high capacity systems. This model should be checked by other methodology to confirm the coherence or to impose the necessary adjustments.
