Resumo: Study of the course of the network of public libraries of the City of Rio de Janeiro, in accordance with the public policies of information and culture implemented in Brazil, particularly in the State of Rio de Janeiro and in the City of Rio de Janeiro during the period from 1940 until the 90 s, in the historical, political and cultural context of Brazil. Considering book and reading as vital instruments of knowledge and that the new technologies brought a challenge to the librarians and to the information professionals, and based in a working experience developed during the 90 s, in this research, the role of librarians, infrastructure, services and products available in the public libraries as well as their cultural actions and extension cultural activities in relation to their community are analyzed. The results of this work represent one contribution for the reflection of those who choose library and books as a source of study and work, in the perspective of the power of public libraries as democratic environment for searching and gathering of knowledge
