Resumo: The climate change as a result of the increase of greenhouse gas emissions is one of the most important issues that the nations face this century, because of several reasons as its global nature, the complexity in threat with, and the uncertainties on the matter. As already verified worldwide by scientists and researchers, the energy sector, together with transportation, is one of the main contributing in world levei for the anthropic emissions of greenhouse gas, as well as for other severa! environmental problems. It is notorious the last and potential future contribution of the Brazilian sugar-alcohol sector for contributing for mitigation of the global problem of climate change. But there are two different considerations to be done in implementing new projects with those environmental benefits. By one side, the emerging roles for presentation and acceptance of projects to be implemented through the clean development mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol and get the rights to carbon credits, which can be negotiated in the intemational carbon market. And, by other side, business criteria for decision making in implementing projects. And by contrasting those considerations, it arose the central subject of this study, which isto verify the perspectives to implement projects of private companies from the sugar-alcohol sector in the state of São Paulo, to be submitted to obtain carbon credits through the CDM. In fact, it can be identified options and altematives in the sugar-alcohol sector in the state of São Paulo for be threaten in a way to be in accord to the dual objectives of the CDM, which are, to contribute to mitigating climate change and to promete the sustainable development. lt is the specific case of sugarcane based power electricity generation, which has a large commercial potential to be explored in Brazil. The CDM can be used as a source of financiai resources and represented an additional incentive to pursue more modem technologies, joining more profitability factor and attractiveness to the projects, making sense also for the private investor. And in specific scenarios of cost of capital, combined to appropriated prices of carbon credits, estimated from market expectations and academic studies, it can be verified that to obtain (and sell) the emission reductions credits even modify the initial project status, without credits, from value destructive to value constructive. Using the combined use of business criteria as decision making tools for analyzing the investment projects, it get a more accurate overview of the perspectives of attractively invest in CDM projects, and the value - and wealth - created by them.
