O significado do trabalho para diferentes gerações: o caso do Banco Central do Brasil na Regional do Rio de Janeiro

Resumo: During the last century, motivation to work was intensively studied and produced theories evolved significantly. More recently, the meaning of work has been gaining importance in the literature as a source of motivation to people. It is interpreted as profoundly personal and dynamic construct, that receives the influences generated by the socialeconomical environrnent in which people live and work. Thus, the meaning of work maybe distinct for different generations. The present research aimed to identify the meaning of work to the employees of Banco Central do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro Branch, according to the generation they belong: the Baby Boomer Generation and the X Generation. The scientific bases for this research were established in the literature concemmg motivation to work, meaning of work and Generation Baby Boomer and X Generation. The meaning of work to the employees of Banco Central do Brasil was accessed through a questionnaire based on the model proposed by The Meaning of Working - MOW (1987). Obtained results indicate that the meaning of work is differently perceived by the two generations in most of its aspects: work centrality, societal norms about working, valued working outcomes and work-role identification.
