Resumo: To investigate the perception that the teachers of the initial series of the Fundamental Teaching of the city of Rio de Janeiro has on the importance of his/her formation to the development of the future generations, it was the objective of my academic research. A lot has been speaking to us lately about the change need in the teacher’s formation. The Brazilian society attended in the second half of the century XX to constant transformations happened in their different sections, some of the which historically corresponsible, which the school, of the education formatting – the family and the church. The society was also witness of the progress of the new technologies, mainly of the communication and of the information that made importance of the media for the education of children and young. They are changes that force a new teacher paradigm, holder of competences differentiated for the effective development of educational duties. In the attempt of reaching the proposed objective we developed three chapters. The first focused mainly the theoretical base which had as larger sustentation Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas on the cultural capital. In the second chapter was discussed revision of the path of the teacher's social representation, through a rising of the history and of the legislation directed to that professional's formation, trying to call attention for the current demands noticed by Edgar Morin, Jacques Delors and Philippe Perrenoud. In the last chapter was presented the research done with teachers of the official net of the city of Rio de Janeiro, not losing of focus the studied theories.
