Resumo: |
Studies on inflation expectations in Brazil reject the hypothesis of rationality. This rejection is based on statistical tests that identify the existence of a systematic bias in inflation expectation. We update some of these tests with the sample size available today. Also, we performed a Monte Carlo experiment that simulates the behavior of inflation and its expectations in a DSGE model. This model includes a monetary rule subject to transitory and permanent shocks (representing a monetary regime change). These simulated series serves as input to test if the results are similar to those observed in practice. The conducted simulation exercise was not able to generate series with the same characteristics. Thus, the study shows no evidence that learning mechanism can explain the bias found in inflation expectations. |
