Resumo: The main objective of the present study is to investigate the perception of Directors and Coordenators and Members of the Administrative Staff of the Public School Units of the Rio de Janeiro State, Capital, regarding the functions of the Educational Supervisor, connected to the Secretary of Education and Culture on a macro-system leveI and to verify the possibility of having this supervision extended to these schools, following the same procedure used with the Private Schools of this Municipality and other Municipalities of the State. In the latter ones this work has been developed in alI schools whether Private or Public. The study had the participation of 328 Directors and 607 Coordinators totalizing 1035 subjects. The data was collected via questionnaires. The hypotheses were tested and then analyzed. The results showed that Administrators, Coordinators and other members of the technical and pedagogical staff, in its majority, had no knowledge of the work developed by the Educational Supervisor. Studying the data presented and comparing it with what had already been collected through literature, one can see that the real work rendered by the Educational Supervisor is not well known. The positive aspect which it represents for the development of the entire educational structure is impaired, thus denying an important aid to the educational context. In conclusion, one can perceive the real necessity of an explanatory work with the technical/administrative and pedagogical staff aimed towards broadening their knowledge of the specific functions exercised by the Educational Supervisor. He is in reality one more technical member of the staff who can be highly effective as he radiates from the top of the administrative pyramid goes through the several leveIs allowing the system to work within established standards and stimulating new performances which turn allows the establishment of new standards.
