Resumo: The author aims basically at three main points while explaining the development of the Internet: explaining the stage of evolution reached by the Brazilian on-line bookstores towards the use of the Internet as a sales channel; making considerations over the on-line sales of books in Brazil and the factors that affect it both positively and negatively; and identifying the most important differences between the on-line consumer and the regular consumer as seen by the Brazilian bookstores. In order to accomplish that, the author developped three case studies with Brazilian on-line bookstores, which are the Livraria Cultura, Siciliano S.A. and Livraria e Papelaria Saraiva S.A. Before going over the three companies, it is given a brief retrospective on the main aspects that evolves the development of the Internet, such as its history, its main carachteristics, some basic data of the Internet, its safety and the overall internaut profile. At the end, some conc1usion is reached towards the future of the Internet in the enterprises that have been researched and also some themes are suggested as essential for future research.
