The purpose of this study was to describe the challenges and opportunities faced by research centers focused on agrienergy. We focused our study in the structure of a research center financed by the private sector, in a cooperative manner, and propose that its model be considered by other segments dedicated to agrienergy which can benefit from this experience. The research in agrienergy offers an enormous range of alternatives for development. In contrast with other segments, agrienergy can be developed along several parts of a long value chain which can start by identifying the most appropriate location for the installation of a new enterprise and proceed through all the steps of the agricultural and industrial process until the finished products. The governance of a research center in this area has as its main challenge the identification of which of these steps must be prioritized. The definition of a technical and economical analysis process for each of the projects to be assessed, have its risk level defined, development time, expected returns until a short, medium and long term maturing projects portfolio can be established. During the whole process, a clear progress report is essential is required.
