Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to present a proposal for a process of assistance to mothers of exceptional children, here defined as children with mental physical of sensorial defects, those with multiple deficiencies and those with emotional or conduct disturbances. Its theoretical foundation includedthe contributions of Spitz and Winnicott on the importance of the mother and child relationship and the experiments of different authors regarding the principal characteristics of the mother and exceptional child relationship. In the elaboration of the proposal, we made use of the contribution of the theory of learning proposed by Bruner, emphasizing its cognitive dimension, of the assumptions of the Theory of Carkhuff on the process of assistance, and of the considerations of Festinger on the Theory of Cognitive Dissonance. The dynamics of the process of assistance may be divided into three main phases, which involve respectivelly the selection and acquaintance with the group, its formation and preparation and the development of the process proper. The 'evaluationand control of theprocess were also planed. Cognitive aspects of the mother and exceptional child were stressed also taking into consideration the emotional evolution of this relationship. Our proposal has specific characteristics to the extent that it emphasizes the cognitive dimension of the process of an assistance effort, which is possible in the Brazilian Social Context.
