Resumo: The main objective of this study is to identify the impacts of the use of Information Technology (IT) and its possible benefits in the institutional management in higher education. It is well known that higher education worldwide has undergone a number of changes resulting mainly from globalization, advancement and democratization of access to IT. It is postulated that the use of IT in different organizational contexts can promote a perception of certain benefits, usually linked to performance gains, the integration of information and the access to a number of data, essential to the management process. Institutional management, academic management, and administrative management processes were indicated in order to establish a greater understanding about the institutional management on higher education, having as a foundational point the model of the dimensions and of the components of education. Regarding the institutional management in higher education supported by the use of IT, the levels of use of IT and the benefits from this use in the institutions that served as base for the development of this study were identified. At the end of the present study, it can be verified that the use of IT is critical for the integration of both the academic and administrative managements, and can add certain benefits to institutional management in higher education, such as flexibility, innovation, quality, productivity, and cost optimization.
