Resumo: A broad spectrum of approaches to behavioral and social problems have been developed in recent years. They are part of the same vast movement toward changing traditional functions, roles, methodologies and programs in helping-professions. The new directions that can be seen in psychology fields look beyond a passive professional stance and point out that intrapersonal models of psychology are not a1ways congruent with social realities. The purpose of this paper was to delineate a number of these innovative approaches which reflect a new, nontraditional philosophical position in helping professions by integrating them into a unified while: the community approach in psychology and more specifically in psychological counseling. The community approach puts emphasis on the need for developing outreach preventive and developmental models in psychology as well as on the need for recognizing the social context in which psychology is practiced. It calls for new definitions of helping goals and roles. This paper was concerned with definitions and establishing a historical, ideological and theorical foundation for this position, as well as illustrating it with programs that go beyond the traditional helping orientations into the context of community-based settings. It was also concerned with the many problems faced in these emerging programs and with the future prospects of the new field of comnunity psychology and counseling psychology. It was concluded that the description of such position should provide important hints for those psychologists who are interested in playing a fuller professional role as well as in knowing more about outreach preventive and develop mental ways of service delivery.
