Resumo: The purpose of this work was to analyse the empirical evidence of negative and positive outcomes in psychotherapy, without restricting to any psychotherapic current in particular. In the last years, authors from, different approaches, have been asking themselves just how long outcomes in psychotherapy should remain inquestioriable. One of the major concerns of researchers in this area was to identify and to ascertain outcomes in psychotherapy. Thus, one question was brought forth: is there, nowadays, any empirical evidence that proves, in an unequivocal way, that psychotherapy affects patients for better or for worse? The review by LAMJBERT, BERGIN & COLLINS was critically examined, but rather than criticize each, study separately, it was chosen to specify a number of types of errors and deficiencies which compromise the validity of the data, identifying studies falling in each category. Clinical, theorical and social implications of the mentioned studies were investigated. Because it is an incipient field, with fresh publications and studies sometimes inconclusive, the issues raised should be regarded with caution. Moreover, it must be emphasized that in a single study one can not claim to have included all evidence about the matter.
