Resumo: Due to the recent 2007-2008 global financial crisis, two topics that are growing in importance are the internationalization of the financial system and the regulation of this system. Although the financial system regulators of several countries take part of international bodies such as the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision to establish principles and rules to be adopted locally, there is still no global regulatory uniformity and banks in different countries may be subject to different forms and levels of regulation. This research aimed to study whether there is a relationship between the more or less restrictive regulatory environment of countries and the degree of internationalization of its domestic banking system, measured by the percentage of foreign assets to the total assets of the system. Using several public databases and a panel data methodology for the analysis, the conclusion is that, in a more comprehensive manner, regulation has influence on the ternationalization of the banking market. However, some variables have a positive impact on this internationalization while others the opposite effect.
