Resumo: Several authors acknowledge that the literature about family businesses (FBs) and their internationalization process in particular is poor. This research contributes to overcoming this deficiency through a case study of Busscar, a Brazilian FB that internationalized. The internationalization process of this company had the peculiarity of having been started while it was managed by a family member and having continued when the management was exercized by a non - family member. This condition permits to compare, in a single case, how these two types of managers behave during the internationalization process. This is a relevant issue to the extent that management is one of the key variables of the control level the family exercises, or "familiarisness" of FBs. The influence of this level of control over how the process of internationalization occurs in FBs is one of the issues not sufficiently addressed by the literature. The comparison allows to conclude that when not under family management, internationalization occurred at higher speed with greater scope and greater acceptance of risk.
