Resumo: The main goal of this study was to investigate gait initiation in individuals with Parkinson’s disease diagnosed without and with freeze of gait (FoG). In this way, individuals without (PD, n=15) and with (PD+FoG, n=12) freeze of gait diagnostics, both sexes, between 45 and 75 years old, and Hoehn and Yahr between 1 and 3 participated in this study. All participants were assessed during the “ON” state of medication. They were instructed to stay still with each foot placed on force plates displaced side by side and with body weight distributed equally between both limbs. After a verbal command, the started walking with the preferred limb at self-selected comfortable speed with no interruption for approximately 4 m, as the first step was on a third force plate. Reflective markers were placed on specific landmarks for kinematic data acquisition and used afterwards for center of mass (CM) estimation. From force plates data, center of pressure (CP) trajectory and body weight distribution during initial position were calculated, and from reflective markers placed on both feet, step length, gait initiation duration, and distance between feet at initial position were calculated. Later, distance between CM and CP were calculated at specific events. Individuals from the PD+FoG group presented shorter step and shorter distance CM-CP at heel strike of swing limb and heel-off of the stance limb compared to those from the PD group. These results indicate that individuals diagnosed with freeze of gait used some different strategies to maintain postural stability and balance during gait initiation.
