Resumo: The harmful effects to human health by the concentration of suspended particles in the atmosphere are recognized by the scientific community. Thus, many countries set limits or standards of concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere, as well as methods for determining its concentration. This study fits in this context, proposing and evaluating a new method, based on methods already applied in other countries, and not recognized in Brazil and in other countries as equivalent to the reference site. Some countries define concentration standards for total suspended particulates and inhalable particles, as well as methods for determining the concentration of these pollutants. Taking into account technical and scientific progress, this paper proposes a method for determination of total suspended particles by low volume sampling, presenting the results obtained with the proposed method and the reference method, assessing advantages and disadvantages considering performance, operational aspects, cost and flexibility. The results of concentration of total suspended particles and values of the control variables obtained with both methods were initially analyzed using descriptive statistics, theory of aerosols sampling, characteristics of the used systems and the sampling sites, for understanding and interpretation. The evaluation was conducted through an analysis of the results of concentration of total suspended particulates with both methods, characterizing the equivalence assessment of the results, subsequently, it was performed a comparative evaluation of the operational and economic aspects related to methods. The work has shown that the proposed method is equivalent to the reference method for the concentration range of total suspended particles 0-100 mg.m-3, which includes the Brazilian annual average standard for the concentration of total suspended particles, 80 mg.m-3, weather conditions, wind and normal atmosphere without excessive amount of coarse particles. It was also noted that the current reference method has limited control of a key variable for aerosol sampling, the rate of aspiration of the sample can lead to a greater uncertainty of results and control, particularly in atmospheres particles larger aerodynamic diameter. The proposed method proves to be a cost attractive alternative for the determination of total suspended particulates, with operating advantages and flexibility to sample also particulate fractions, like PM10, by a small change in the sampling system, of low additional cost, so with the same base system it is possible to sample particle fractions, which are of great interest, once they are recognized as to produce the most harmful effect on human health, and thus, the use of the proposed method becomes a good cost-effective alternative .
