Resumo: In women’s biological evolution, climacterium is considered to be the transition period from the end of reproductive phase to the beginning of senility. It begins with the decline in ovarian activity and the announcement of menopause. Physiological and psychological changes associated to climacterium can influence, to a greater or lesser degree, on women’s performance and sexual satisfaction. This qualitative study aimed to identify and analyze aspects women consider positive and negative in their sexuality during climacterium. Data were collected at a family’s health center in Patos de Minas - MG during weekly group meetings with women experiencing climacterium. The focus group technique was utilized. Following on from analyses and categorization of the data, basically negative aspects were identified in women’s reports. It was concluded that climacterium is an obstacle to women’s sexuality, not only because of psychophysiological issues inherent in their life cycle, but also because of cultural aspects; poor understanding of their own bodies; difficulty in relationship and dialogue with their partners; and partners’ lack of knowledge and difficulty in understanding what some women experience in this phase. Moreover, adequate qualification of staff responsible for receiving climacteric women at health centers is necessary aiming essentially at health actions which may offer them integral assistance
