Resumo: Disorders in mucociliary transport (MCT) can induce impairment in the health related quality of life of patients and leads to serious risks and even death in diseases such as cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesias. Thus, it is crucial to understand the functioning of the MCT and how it can affect the clearance of respiratory secretions. The MCT velocity can be measured in vivo either using substances with flavor, for example, saccharin or using an in vitro model, the frog palate. Objective: This study aims to review publications that reference the MCT on the saccharin test and the frog palate model and analyze its results. Methods: We included articles published in journals indexed in Medline, Embase, CINAHL and Scielo revised by three reviewers. The following keywords were used: (mucociliary or mucus) and (transport or clearance) and (saccharin test and frog palate). Results: We found a total of 179 articles and 159 were excluded (93 because the title was not reference with our objectives, 38 had only the abstract, 3 due to language, 11 were not available, 14 method and 4 because the MTC tests were incompatible with our purpose. Sixteen studies were included in this review. Conclusion: Based on the evidence found we conclude that in clinical practice the saccharin test was more feasible, low cost, good reproducibility, easy and quick analysis of MCT.
