Resumo: Hypertension (HBP) is considered the main non transmissible chronic disease (CNCD), affecting thousands of people around the world. Pending a more effective and appropriate care for hypertensive patients, characterizing the hypertension patients profile is important in order to adopt measures for monitoring and controlling the disease in the purpose of encouraging healthy lifestyles promoting health. A study of quantitative and descriptive character of the registered population has been carried out on the “HiperDia” during the period from January 1st to December 31st, 2008. The objective was to characterize the epidemiological profile of hypertensive individuals registered in the Family Health Units (USF) of the city of Paracatu-MG. We have used a semi-probabilistic systematic sampling out of 29% of all registered forms of the “HiperDia” from all of the 11 PSF units, considering a confidence interval of 95%. The results were: The data analysis showed that from the subjects studied, 72.6% were female and 27.4% male, from the age group of 50 years or more was predominant with 70.5% and 55.2% color brown. Regarding schooling, 27.8% are illiterate, and renal disease was the most frequent complication with 12.8%. Characterizing the epidemiological profile of the hypertensive from Paracatu-MG, has generated data that could subsidize health actions, directed to the local reality, contributing to the promotion, prevention and treatment of hypertensive patients.
