Resumo: | Distance education has been significantly growing in Brazil, as appointed in the last study conducted by ABED (Brazilian Distance Education Association) in 2018, which has calculated that there are around 9 million students in distance education courses. This study sought to understand what the higher education professors think about the impact of this expansion in their teaching career. In addition, the present study aimed to discuss public policies for the expansion of distance education in Brazil; understand what the higher education professors think about teaching in distance education courses; determine the tensions that have been arousing from distance learning education from the perspective of professors and verify whether these professors have been looking for alternatives to perform in this scenario. Data were collected through questionnaires, with 35 multiple choice and open-ended questions, using Google forms. These questionnaires were sent to 450 professors of a private institution in the city of São Paulo. There were 65 responses. The data collected were categorized and analyzed. The expansion of distance learning education has been bringing changes, with new demands of competencies and new roles for the teaching career. A great deal of the educators who responded the questionnaire holds an optimistic position regarding distance education. Despite the tensions mentioned by the professors, such as losses in wages and functions, as well as the requirement to use technology, among others, the collected answers show that they are still in search of an ongoing education in order to prepare for the new scenario and keep their employability. |
