Resumo: Entrance into University inaugurates a period of greater autonomy, enabling new experiences, but for many also represents a moment of greater vulnerability, making them more susceptible to drug use and its consequences. In addition, the easy access and constant stimulus for alcohol consumption in the festive and social environments involving college students favor and expand consumption among them. Thus, the present work aims to verify the risk behavior related to the use of alcohol and other drugs use among students. The study was descriptive transversal type with a sample of 123 students from a private University. Students responded to a questionnaire containing Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test – ASSIST (Test for screening of involvement with tobacco, alcohol and other drugs), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test – AUDIT (test for identification of problems related to alcohol use) and a questionnaire about risk behavior associated with the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The selection process took place through simple random sample. The statistical analyses were conducted by the Epi Info® statistical program version 3.5.2 (CDC, 2010). The significance level of p<0.05 was considered, with confidence interval (CI) of 95% for all statistical tests applied. It was found that 89.4% of students used any alcoholic beverage in life, 74.5% of users already got drunk and 22.7% associated alcohol consumption with another drug. It was noted that 26% of the students were current users of tobacco and 22.8% used some kind of illicit drug. According to the results of the ASSIST, 50.9% of college student’s alcohol users, 46.2% of users of tobacco and 16.4% of consumers of marijuana showed consumption of risk. It was also identified that a significant portion of the users presented risk behavior associated with the use of drugs such as: drunkenness, driving under the influence of alcohol, sexual intercourse without a condom and involvement in situations of violence. These data show that the prevention of drug abuse and risk behaviors among college students is in need of major scientific investments for the development of intervention strategies within the University.
