Resumo: The objective of the research was to analyze the differences between the types of business models adopted and the characteristics of innovation developed by industrial companies. Its operationalization took place through a survey of the type survey, realized in 85 companies, inserted in 15 industrial sectors, located in the South Region of Brazil. With a quantitative approach characterized by the use of multivariate statistical techniques. The main results were: (i) companies have a maturity profile in their business, (ii) using the BMF framework of Chesbrough (2012), five types of MNs were found, with innovation orientation closed to superiority (iii) the characteristics of innovation according to the orientation of MNs, it was verified that: a) innovation efforts (expenditures) were higher in the companies adopting open MNs; B) the management of the innovation process analyzed through its basic steps, found statistically significant differences only in the stage of brainstorming between the closed and open MNs, c) regarding the results provided by the innovations analyzing information of creation and capture of value , There were significant differences between the companies adopting closed and open MNs in the following criteria: (i) number of new products, (ii) number of patents, (iii) number of awards, (iv) percentage of invoicing from licensing Technologies and; (V) in relation to the influences of the individual characteristics of the companies in the duality between MN types and the characteristics of the innovation, showed positive correlations between the technological intensity of the sector and the efforts in investment in R & D, time of existence and stage of learning in the process Innovation management, source of capital and number of specialists and export orientation and the implementation stage in the innovation management process. The theoretical contributions of the research were: a) presentation of a comparative reality between two orientations of MNs, through mature companies and inserted in traditional industries. It also provided a reading of the peculiarities existing between MNs and their effects on the innovation process, confirming the close and close relationship between them.
