Resumo: | The1988 Federal Constitution points out health as a right of all citizens and a died of State. The law gives permission for private enterprises to deliver health services of in the supplementary sector. Although SUS (Unique Health System) has universality as a principle, 30% of the Brazilian population pay for health additional assistence. The ANS (2000), which inspects and rules the functioning of this area has encouraged private health organizations to develop health promotion programs and programs prevention risks and illnesses. This research has the goal to know the academic literature related to the health promotion developed by the supplementary sector health. The literature review was used as methodology through the bibliographical research of publications about actions of health promotion implemented by supplementary health sector. It has been done a search in the BVS, through the keywords: supplementary health, health promotion, quality of life, group practice, private procedure and basic services, published between 1998 and 2008. According to this selection criteria, 18 articles have been included. Their analysis shows that the most approached are integrality of care and economic pattern, Rio de Janeiro is the state in which there is the largest amount of literature on the subject. Less than half of the articles refer to the initiatives of the organizations whose goal are the convergent with the policies. There is great diversification between the topics held by the studies, most of the carried out in qualitative methodology. The analysis also shows that the knowledge about the health promotion by supplementary health sector are not convergent with the policies and others categories were just not approached according Health Ministry and ANS. Others studies must be carried out, by different methods to check in, in fact, supplementary health sector have little adhered to the model of health promotion and give the opportunity to new researches carried out in order to fulfill knowledge gaps.
