Resumo: | This study aimed at evaluating the mesiodistal dimension of the permanent teeth in patients with second premolar agenesis. The hypothesis tested was that patients with agenesis present a generalized reduction in tooth size. The sample comprised 129 patients, from 7 to 24 years of age, presenting with agenesis of at least one second premolar, previously collected from the orthodontic records of the University of São Paulo City and from 8 private offices. The tooth size was measured in dental casts from the initial records, with a calliper specially manufactured for dental measurements. The results were compared with reference values previously reported for Brazilians (Student test t). Additionally, the sexual dimorphism and correlation between the number of absent second premolars and tooth size were evaluated. The results were considered at a 5% level. The patients with second premolar agenesis presented a smaller mesiodistal diameter in the majority of the remaining teeth, without sexual dimorphism. There was no correlation between the number of absent second premolars and the size of the permanent teeth. The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that patients with second premolar agenesis have smaller permanent teeth than patients without agenesis. |
