Resumo: A hospital is a complex institution and like any other business company it needs to remain competitive and updated in the market. After globalization and the increase of technology and information, the organizations started to feel the need of being more assertive and flexible, of producing with more quality, lower costs, and less time, however little has been discussed about the environmental issues. A hospital institution has in its processes activities that have the power of causing harmful impacts for the environment, such as: evasion of liquid effluents, destination of the contaminated solid residues, uncontrolled consumption of natural resources, and pollution. Therefore, the main objective of the present paper is to demonstrate that it is possible to add actions that aim at preserving the environment, especially in hospital institutions. The applied method was a descriptive study carried out through bibliographic research and analysis of the rules from the Hospital Accreditation and ISO standard 14001:2004. This study enabled to structure a proposal so that the Hospital Accreditation rule started considering environmental requirements in its structure, which must be observed by the health institution in its daily routine. With this new structure, it is clear that the number of worries and care regarding the environment, in the health area, significantly increases, not only the residue itself needs special care, but also a series of other themes, such as natural resources, atmospheric pollution, acquisition of material and services. Any health institution may implant and keep the proposed system, the only thing that is necessary is that the high administration be convinced and support its implantation, adopting measures that make the dissemination of practices easier and provide continued education for the whole organization. If there is a need or an interest by the institution of a certifiable environmental system, the institution may do it through the ISO14001 standard, because the structure already foresees the well-suited points between both standards.
