This study evaluates the possible impacts and developments in the use of the Internet and other information technology tools in design activities related to new products or production processes, trying to identify the degree of virtualization of this activity in the industries of São Paulo state. Quantitative data obtained through the application of a survey (first semester of 2010) were compared with data obtained by other researchers in tow other occasions in the past (in 2003/2004, 665 responses were obtained and in 2006/2007, there were 105 responses. The population was the same for the three studies, but samples different. The results show there is a trend of increasingly using the Internet and other IT tools for design activities, but that is not taking place at the same pace as the development of the Internet, itself. There is still a lot of potential for growth and development of new techniques, methods, practices and technologies to make better use of the Internet for this purpose, mainly in the smaller companies.
