Resumo: | The health and quality of life of the elderly are influenced by physical, psychological, social, cultural and nutritional factors, so to evaluate and promote the elderly's health means to consider a multidisciplinary action. From these demands, it is necessary to monitor the health conditions of the population in order to enable the formulation of health policies. The objective of this study is to evaluate the nutritional status, quality of food and functional capacity of the elderly of a philanthropic institution of a city in the interior of Minas Gerais. The study was carried out with the elderly hospitalized in the institution classified as malnourished between April and July 2017. Eligible individuals should be older than 60 years, have motor autonomy conditions, be hospitalized for at least three days for treatment of acute diseases short-term. Data collection was performed through three steps: searching the institution's hospital system, analyzing the medical records and interviewing the elderly who met the inclusion criteria previously mentioned. The instruments used were the nutritional screening NRS2002, routine in the hospital, Lawton Scale, which evaluates the functional capacity, the test How is your food and the Standard Criterion of Economic Classification Brazil. The D'Agostino and Pearson normality test was used, the correlation coefficient r calculated was the Spearman's coefficient, t-test, the Mann-Whitney test, chi-square and the Fisher exact test. Participants were 50 elderly, mostly women, aged between 60 and 94 years, with a mean of 71.9 years and ± 9.0 years; in the male group, the age ranged from 63 to 85 years, with an average of 72.6 years and ± 6.6 years. There was a significant correlation between the Economic Classification and the Nutritional Risk, because the better the socioeconomic classification, the higher the percentage of elderly people who need to be attentive to food and between the Lawton Scale Score and the Feed Test, where the better the Socioeconomic classification of the elderly is the percentage of elderly people who need to be attentive to food. Age and scores on the Lawton Scale were significantly correlated, as the human being ages, it becomes increasingly difficult to perform day-to-day tasks. Aging is an important nutritional risk factor and presents a significant correlation with BMI classification. The early identification of individuals at nutritional risk and the establishment of intervention programs to reduce this risk allows the early detection and treatment of diseases or asymptomatic conditions. Thus, it is necessary to study the nutritional status of the population. |
