Resumo: The present work aims at investigating how the furniture industries located in Arapongas, in the state of Paraná, has been influencing the levels of the technological capacity, contributing to the internationalization of the integrated industries, considering three conditional factors: (1) inter-firm factors through the presence in cluster; (2) intra-firm factors via analysis of the technological capacity; and (3) exogenous factors linked to governmental politics. It is an exploratory study, descriptive of a case that departs from the presupposition that the geographical concentration (cluster) accelerates the technological development and, consequently, the competitiveness of the industries that are found there, making their internationalization possible. The results show that there is dissemination as much in terms of advance in the technological capacity of the industries, especially, from the larger ones and from their local suppliers, as in the internationalization of the industries due to the mechanisms of coordination and knowledge disseminated in the cluster. However, the research could not demonstrate, in a clear way, based on evidences and reports that the increase in the technological capacity helped in the internationalization of the companies that are situated there. This study brings new interpretations to the academy about the performance and strategy of clustering companies as well as it shows the possibility of developing new sector policies, aiming at the regional development of the micro, small and medium enterprises – MSME through the employment of clusters.
