Resumo: | Sustainability is an issue that mobilizes governments, communities, businesses and individuals in various interdependent actions that seek to meet human needs of this and future generations. Its importance is indisputable, but difficult to materialize. In this sense, systems of indicators are developed to measure, report and evaluate and assess the outcome of sustainability actions. Indicators represent each dimension of sustainability and can be aggregated into a single index, whose advantage is to connect in a unique way the three dimensions of sustainability. Different industrial sectors develop their indicator systems, which enables the assessment of performance and redirect its strategy towards sustainability. Furthermore, the aggregation of such indicators in the form an index has the advantage clearly and succinctly informing the sustainability performance. In the textile sector, performance assessment is most often restricted to economic and social indicators. The environmental dimension, even when considered by industry is assessed by fewer indicators. However, it is verified that this impact has many aspects, which are relevant to the balance of sustainability. Therefore, the present work proposed a sustainability index for the textile industry, integrating the three aspects of sustainability. Key indicators of the three dimensions were combined, then validated, and subsequently, qualified for aggregation by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The AHP is a methodology normally used for decision-making, which here was employed to rank the relevance of the indicators relatively to each other to construct a composite index. Academic and professional experts in the textile industry, environmental management and sustainability were asked to contribute in the construction of this classification. In addition, in order to verify the applicability of the index, the methodology was applied to data from two textile industries, published in their Sustainability Reports. The index allowed the comparison of performance in sustainability between the companies. The index was also able to reflect the indicator improvement due to the introduction of technologies to lower environmental impact and due to adaptation to environmental legislation. Finally, it was observed that a better overall performance in sustainability depends on improvements in every aspect, and focus on only one dimension does not lead to a sustainable business. |
