Resumo: There is a great potential of natural resources in Angola, especially in diversified forest production, which has served as a source of revenue for the government as well as subsistence for the largest percentage of the population. Forest harvesting, however, has been conducted unsustainably. Logging erupted in the 1950s. Until that time, the extraction of this resource was rudimentary and lacked principles and management plans to prosper continued production. This study aims to discuss the role of sustainable forest management of Angola’s forest resources, as well as to analyze key strategies and means of implementing policies outlined for the development of the sector in order to promote forms of use and economic monetization of forests without losing focus on protection. To advance research, procedures used involved the research of literature and documents published by environmental institutions of the Angolan government. The documents consulted were of current legislation like the Forest Policy, Strategy and Reforestation Settlement along with reports and mechanisms for the granting of operating licenses. With the goal of developing a proposed model for forestry in Angola, there was also a correlation with forestry models presented by Mozambique, Brazil and Cameroon. It was found that the adoption of multiple use forest management is a strategy used to reverse the fragmentation and degradation of forests, which are gradually harming the economy and threatening the balance of ecosystems along with many highly important plant species. The conversion of natural forests into farmland, forest exploitation of a disorderly manner, as well as cattle ranching empirically reinforce the idea of adoption and use of forest protection based on forest management. At the end of this study, we present a proposal for forest management supported by methods of forest preservation as a way to ensure the improvement of the structure of forest ecosystems, conservation of flora, maintaining the capacity for natural regeneration and perpetuation of species of economic interest. This proposal aims to enact the use of timber and non-timber forest resources in order for production to be achieved in a sustainable way.
