Resumo: This research explores historical events transformed into media products. The focus of the work is the audiovisual production “Amazon: from Galvez to Chico Mendes”, by Gloria Perez, a series produced by TV Globo and broadcasted in 2007. The objective is to observe the representation in audiovisual narratives of historical facts. The miniseries has been chosen because it approaches a topic related to the 1899 crisis in the state of Acre and to the rubber boom in Brazil. The studies concerning Acre are poorly spread and academic references are inexpressive. Thus, it is important to investigate the ways through which the past is approached, the codes, the conventions and the practices through which the story is brought to the screen. The year approached by the researched audiovisual work is 1898, when Acre still belonged to Bolivia. The story moves towards the reintegration of the region as a territory in November 1903, with the Treaty of Petrópolis, and its recognition as a Brazilian state in 1904. The production highlights the life of the rubber tappers, the development of the state, which was promoted by the rubber produced, and the deforestation of Amazon, which started in the late nineteenth century. It also gives life to three characters, including the Spaniard Luiz Galvez Rodríguez Arias (San Fernando, 1864 - Madrid, 1935), the José Plácido de Castro (San Gabriel, September 9th, 1873 - Seringal Benfica, August 11th, 1908), a member of the military, and the environmentalist Francisco Alves Mendes Filho, better known as Chico Mendes (Xapuri, December 15th , 1944 - Xapuri, December 22nd, 1988). As this is a proposal for a historical reconstruction, simultaneous treatment between the past and the present is imposed through the exploration of the historical work and the interaction with the contemporary one. In 2007, when the eries was broadcasted, there were several factors that influenced the production of the plot, among them a great repercussion on the preservation of the environment and on the growing deforestation of the Amazon. To this day there is much to discuss about the topic; Amazon has always been a global issue because of its importance for the preservation of natural resources. Besides, attention will be paid to political and social factors that influenced the production, and to how they are reflected in the construction of the plot through discourse and media processes. What was obscured, what acquired greater prominence. The aim is to observe how television drama gives effect of truth and effect of reality to cultural artifacts of fiction that reconstitute the national history. The aim is also to observe how facts so significant to the struggle between large estate and a forest protected by a popular leader, as well as the fight for the environment, were reconstructed on TV.
