Resumo: The history of reading justifies its importance for accomplishing the writing culture on the occident. Some social and cognitive changes were caused by both the press and the alphabet. Therefore, reading and writing are inseparable and relevant for comprehending some social processes. Being it presential or distance education, these instruments are essential. The distance education program chosen for this investigation is the focus of a necessary discussion – Do material utilized on different support hold, on the student’s view, distinct importances and implications on building concepts of reading and on teaching and learning processes? This thesis evaluates reading, which is the base-instrument of study on distance education and, for such, it investigates its context – place where it occurs, historical moment and its agent – students and teachers who are readers of the text. The analysis consists of a theoretical framework in which the authors present Distance Education under diverse perspectives of technology and communication by a sociological trend; some important concepts about reading, reader, hyperreading and text support and, yet, the present theory regarding the hypertext. The challenge of this piece of research is to analyse and compare the utilization of didactic materials in distance education on printed and electronic versions in order to comprehend reading practices and to describe functionalities of the program in relation to language strategies that may develop/improve material and communication process. The case study methodology intended to examine how are the reading practices in the distance learning and the way how these practices interacts with the didactic materials developed for this modality of education. The comparison between printed and electronic texts may subsidize further implementations on distance education didactic materials for it will create opportunities to the pedagogical team, who are responsible for these materials, such as a qualitative systematic comparison which will point out some avenues for solving problems of these both text supports
