Resumo: The growth strategy by merger and acquisition has been one of the ways companies have adopted to expand its market share in the market they operate, obtain economies of scale and synergistic. Therefore, this study aims to measure the economic performance of private higher education institutions in distance learning with growth strategies by mergers, acquisitions and organically. For this, as methodological proposal, according to the character of its purpose, this study is explanatory. Considering the approach of its problem, it is qualitative. The analysis is characterized as a case study because it shows the economic performance of two private higher education institutions in distance learning: one that grows by mergers and acquisitions (Kroton) and another that grows organically (Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina - UNISUL). The period under review of both institutions was between 2012 and 2014. Secondary data were used. Both higher education institutions, for their characteristics, a publicly traded one; the other philanthropic, are required to provide on their websites their financial reporting. The secondary data analyzed were the economic indicators of the two higher education institutions. The research obtained the results of the two higher education institutions, and then showed the differences on the results, mentioning the factors that explain the existence of those differences. The research corroborates the theoretical background, showing that there are economic benefits arising from the growth strategy by merger and acquisition conducted by the higher education institutions in distance learning. This study aims to contribute to the literature in this researched area, since few Brazilian studies have addressed the mergers and acquisitions subject in the educational sector of the higher education institutions analyzed in this study.
