Resumo: The expectation of society to achieve sustainability is increasing. Among the main challenges, production of products with environmental sustainability can be highlighted. In this context, it can be noticed that industry is a production agent with great potential to contribute to social expectations and is an input for studies and researches in the area of applied social sciences. The aim of this study was to understand if the environmental sustainability is relevant in decision-making and implementation of technological innovations in the ceramic tile industries of Santa Catarina. A scientific literature review was carried out in international databases, Web of Science and Scopus, enabling the elaboration of categories for analysis, as well as the identification of indicators, concepts, barriers and facilitators for environmental innovations in the ceramic industry. This is a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study, in the form of a case/multi-case study. The selected data collection technique was the intentional sample, which was obtained through the obtaining of primary data in 16 interviews with members of 8 ceramic tile companies. The technique of content analysis suggested by Bardin was used in the analysis of the data. The empirical results allowed the understanding that the ceramic industries of Santa Catarina practice environmental innovations related to the reuse of waste, preservation of water resources, reduction of consumption per unit of production, use of tailings to produce by-products and innovations in environmental management processes and in marketing aspects. In this study it was possible to identify that environmental sustainability is present in the decision-making process of the implantation of technological innovations, but it is not always the main focus of the decision-making process for technological innovations, and often occurs mainly due to legal obligation and increased competitiveness and profitability, among other factors that are not directly related to the desire to promote environmental sustainability.
