Resumo: Introduction: The infection by the virus HCV has been one of the main causes of hepatic diseases in the world, besides the difficult and late diagnosis. In this sense, it is important to estimate the impact generated by the hepatitis C regarding the premature mortality as well as the generated disability, the is that “Burden of Disease”. Objective: Estimating the burden of disease due to hepatitis C in the state of Santa Catarina in the year 2009. Methods: An epidemiologic study of ecologic design was carried out. The population analyzed was composed by estimated data of prevalence and mortality by HCV of resident citizens in the state of Santa Catarina in the year 2009. The burden of disease by HCV was estimated through the indicators YLD, YLL, and DALY and their respective rates by gender, age brackets and health region. Results: The burden of disease was estimated in 65,832 DALYs, being the component YLD responsible for 96% of this data. Males demonstrated a higher YLL, whilst the distributions of YLD and DALY were similar by gender. The age brackets of 45 to 59 years showed higher number of DALYs. The age brackets of 45-59 and 30-44 showed higher quantity of YLD, and of 60-69 showed a higher quantity of YLL. The region of the Extremo Oeste was responsible by the highest quantity of DALYs among all the regions. Conclusion: The burden of disease in Santa Catarina was estimated in 65,832 DALYs, and the age brackets of 30-44 and 45-59 the highest values. The Extremo Oeste region showed the highest value. The male gender and the age 30-44 and 45-59 years-old also showed the highest DALY rates.
